The Digital Film Revolution

At the moment there is a radical revolution happening in the world of film, and that revolution is digital film. Digital video production is allowing film makers the chance to showcase their work and talents at very little cost. Making short films, even feature films does not require a huge budget and an army of employees, it can be done very easily and very effectively on low budget cameras and a good technical ability.

We have just wrapped up work on our latest project to utilize HDSLR cinematography. For those who are not aware, HDSLR is a new breed of stills cameras that incorporate the option of filming in HD. They look like a normal stills camera, they also operate like one. However, the quality of the filmed image is far closer to 35mm celluloid than some of the most expensive cameras out there, and the best thing is, you can get one for around a thousand pounds.

Now there are certain drawbacks, firstly you need to buy a good viewfinder adaptor, as well as a few new lenses, but all this is still remarkably cheap in comparison to a lot of broadcast cameras. We filmed a music video using the t2i/550D HDSLR and also the Panasonic hpx301e P2, so that we could test the difference in quality, and see how the images stood up next to each other. Although the Panasonic seemed to be better for green screen work, and being a cameraman myself, had all of the buttons in the right place and was very manual, the images from the SLR were as good, and possibly looked more like 35mm

Certain drawbacks of the SLR are firstly if you are one of many video production companies out there who have a client list that expects a certain level of quality and professionalism, the SLR does not look like a broadcast camera, and so could potentially put corporate video clients off. However, if you are looking to film a documentary or need to film abroad then the camera is fantastic, reasonably inexpensive lenses means that you can have a beautiful shot for interviews to wide crowd scenes, and the fact that it is compact and lightweight means that you can take it with you wherever you want without worry.

Now, back to the revolution, it is not just the inexpensive high quality cameras that are making it possible for anyone to easily set up as a film maker, it is also the amount that can be done in post production, using digital grading. The post production process of manipulating the image has allowed film makers to replicate high end Hollywood film looks, and, importantly create something which is unique and visually striking. There is only one snag, you have to be good at it, this takes time, patience, a lot of experimenting, and importantly a technical knowledge.

Video production and especially music video production is probably the best way to start out experimenting, as by its nature a music video wants to be stylistic, creative and unique.
